Post 11 - Lake Titicaca - Uros Floating Reed Islands

Lake Titicaca encompasses both Peru and Bolivia and is the highest navigable lake in the world. The altitude of the lake is 12,500 feet. We took a boat tour of the lake and stopped at the floating reed islands of Uros. This small group of artificial islands is inhabited by families of the Uros people. The island we visited was occupied by four families and is anchored to the bottom of the lake. Every couple of weeks a new layer of totora reeds are added to the top of the island. Walking on the island is like walking on a water bed.
